Thomas, a University of New Orleans professor and expert on education reform measures,was elected to the Jefferson Parish School Board in 1992 and re-elected without opposition in 1994 and 1998. She served as the board’s President and twice as Vice President. Thomas introduced the motion that created a strategic long-range planning committee for Jefferson Parish schools, and she introduced the motion that created the first charter school in Louisiana. Thomas, a Republican, has been active in party politics as an elected member of the Republican Parish Executive Committee and the State Central Committee.
